26.11.2008 When Kittens become Cats, Teresa Gillespie

7 pm
Artist Talk - Teresa Gillespie
Teresa Gillespie (Dublin, 1977) studied at the Glasgow School of Art and at the Royal College of Art in London. She works with mixed media and sound to create fictional environments that can suggest individual, social or political psychologies. Using found detritus from construction waste and home electronics, pipes, old taps, wiring, abandoned typewriters, children’s chairs and washbasins, Gillespie leaves evidence to suggest that the gallery space has previously been inhabited, that something has happened there. The result is comparable to a stage set, except that the play is over and the actors are no longer present. The audience are left to move around the installation and to piece together the absent subject’s narrative.
Gillespie lives and works in London. She has exhibited in England, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Portugal and Germany. While resident at the Frankfurter Kunstverein in November, she will produce a new site-specific project in the basement of the Atelierfrankfurt. She is also presently working towards a solo show at the Enrico Fornello Gallery in Italy.
