Reading by Dacia Maraini – “Trio”

13.03.2023, 18:30

The writer Dacia Maraini, one of Italy’s most important voices, reads from her latest book Trio (Folio Verlag, 2021):

Sicily, 1743. The plague rages in Messina and spreads throughout Sicily. It covers the cities with misery and death. Agata and Annuzza have known each other since childhood, when they learned the art of embroidery from Sister Mendola in the convent and secretly read books together. Now both have fled to the countryside to escape the epidemic and keep up their deep friendship with lively correspondence. Annuzza’s heart belongs to Girolamo, but he is the husband of her friend Agata. But jealousy and possessiveness do not succeed in severing their bond. Because when everything breaks down, it is the real friendships that gives us the courage to get up again.

Dacia Maraini (*1936 in Fiesole, IT) was part of the feminist movement in Italy in the 1970s and can be considered the first writer in Italy to address issues such as violence against women, incest, prostitution or lesbian love from a feminist perspective. Today, she still campaigns for women’s rights and gender equality. She belonged to the literary circle of writers and artists such as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Elsa Morante and Alberto Moravia. Her work has been awarded various important literary prizes and she is a recipient of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
