Since the fall of Suharto\u2019s authoritarian regime in 1998 and the resulting period of profound social change, a number of artist groups or creatives working partially in collectives have been founded in Indonesia. These groups constitute a key component of Indonesia\u2019s cultural landscape. With their projects, they engage in a form of activism that continues to react to current social issues. The groups\u2019 open and interdisciplinary structures allow them to operate on local and global scales.<\/p>\n
Amanda Rath is a lecturer of Modern and Contemporary Art of Southeast Asia in the Department of Southeast Asian Studies and the Institute of Art History at Goethe-University Frankfurt\/Main. An expert on Southeast Asian art, her lecture elaborated on these developments in Indonesia\u2019s artistic landscape, which are also gaining relevance in a global context.<\/p>\n
