Frankfurt Now! — The Historisches Museum Gone Astray

14.06.2011

What kind of a museum does 21st-century urban society need? The Historisches Museum Frankfurt is answering this question by initiating “City Lab”, an exhibition series that began on April 20 with the opening of “East End/ East Beginning: A District in Transition.” The exhibition is based on the experience and knowledge of the inhabitants, business owners, and children from the Ostend (East End) district of Frankfurt, who have articulated their version of the present. We asked Angela Jannelli about the kinds of surprises and problems confronted by the curators of the exhibition and how these altered the work of the museum.

Angela Jannelli is a specialist in German Studies, Romance Languages, and Cultural Studies. She submitted her dissertation “Wild Museums—What One can still Convey through the Museum beyond Academic Research” at the University of Hamburg. As a research fellow at the Historisches Museum Frankfurt she has been coordinating “Frankfurt Now!” the section of the new permanent exhibition dedicated to the present.
