The current exhibition The Presence of Absence
The exhibition The Presence of Absence: Matter and Traces – Imprints of Life in Time invites visitors to engage intensively with existential questions of human existence by combining fascinating artistic and scientific perspectives. The show explores the interplay of matter, time and space and opens up new spaces for thought that go far beyond the visible.
Where do we come from? What is the origin of all matter on Earth and in the vastness of the cosmos? How do natural events shape and transform the Earth, altering human lives with their immense power? What myths and images do we create to connect with the spiritual?
Artworks and objects from scientific collections in geology and astrophysics, casts from Pompeii, footprints of prehistoric humans, and reproductions of ancient cave drawings by our human ancestors await you in our spaces. They provide an opportunity to explore the concept of traces that humans, as well as natural events, inscribe permanently into matter.
Traces, imprints, and negative forms allow the absent to endure through time. They enable us to reflect on past moments we have not experienced ourselves and, in turn, inspire new ways of contemplating the future.

Educational program for children, young people and school classes:
We are delighted to welcome you with students or independent groups of children and teenagers. We offer tailored, age-appropriate, dialog-based tours, the focus of which we are happy to coordinate with you in advance. For school classes, we provide a reduced tour fee of €50 (plus admission per person).
In addition, we have developed numerous programs based on specific themes from the exhibition. For young people in particular, we aim to offer an experience where art becomes a means of addressing overarching questions about life.
For children and teenagers aged 6 to 16, we offer workshops in collaboration with the Institute for Art Education at the Justus Liebig University Giessen. Under the direction of Tobias Becker, the students of his project seminar have created a rich program specifically for the Frankfurter Kunstverein. Through hands-on exercises using various materials, participants can explore themes central to human life in a tangible way.
The starting point of these workshops is selected artworks or objects from the fields of art, natural history, and archaeology. The workshop leaders will introduce your class to different materials and techniques that illustrate the themes of the exhibition. By working practically with materials such as clay, plaster, soot, or even stargazing apps, children and teenagers are guided through vivid sensory impressions, engaging their sense of touch, feel, and texture to connect with the topics.
The workshops aim to teach participants to interpret traces and use them as a foundation for imagination, storytelling, or logical reasoning. Students will also create their own signs and traces to explore and reflect on the world around us creatively. Our motto is to know the past to imagine the future and thereby positively transform the present.
The workshops will take place between mid-December 2024 and the end of January 2025. The dates and detailed descriptions are available in our calendar of events.
Each workshop is designed for one school class at a time. For school classes, we offer a reduced workshop fee of €65 (including admission to the exhibition and material costs).
Please send registrations via email to post(at)fkv.de. Kindly observe the designated age groups for each date.
