As part of the “Arte Essenziale” exhibition, the composer and instrument maker Volker Staub has presented solo compositions for newly developed sound generators in various exhibition rooms. Most of these instruments produce only one sound which, in the course of the performance, is explored with microscopic precision. In each room, the public has experienced a unique tension between art and music.
Volker Staub (born 1961) has been developing and building experimental musical instruments and sound installations since 1981. In 1995 he received the Hessian composition award for his work; in 1997, he held a scholarship at the Villa Massimo in Rome, and at the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles in 1999. His concerts and radio broadcasts have been aired in many European countries, as well as Israel, the USA, Australia, Japan and Ecuador. He has been carrying out diverse musical-pedagogical projects since 1988, and has been a board member at the Institut für Neue Musik und Musikerziehung (Institute for New Music and Music Education) in Darmstadt since 2004.
