Opening: Paulo Nazareth – Aqui é Arte

02.06.2016

Paulo Nazareth has made the act of walking the foundation of his artistic practice; he traverses continents on foot, crosses borders and passes through entire territories. His work is based not on the production of individual finished works but on fleeting, temporary traces: ephemeras, which take on the significance of an existential search for identity. Notes, photographs, videos, personal items or objects found along the way, leaflets and posters, with which he constructs different projects, experiences and encounters accumulated during his travels. In the words of the artist himself: “The possibility of life happening is wonderful. That interests me, the fragility of life, and the precariousness.”
The most celebrated episode in the artist’s career is his journey on foot from Brazil to New York, which he completed after two years with the washing of his feet in the Hudson River (Noticias de America, 2011-2012). Walking is an original act of every living being, the journey a condition of physical and symbolic mobility or as an imposed experience born out of the compulsion to flee your own country from hunger or war.

During its renovation the Frankfurter Kunstverein will be hosting the exhibition “Aqui é Arte” at Mousonturm, as part of the Festival Projeto Brasil – theatre, dance, music und current debates from Brazil, taking place from June 2 – 26, 2016.
