Sabine Marte is a video artist, performer, and musician. Self-perception and the perception of the self by others play an important role in her video works, in which she often appears as a protagonist. Marte focuses the camera on herself and her closest surroundings. In her existential investigations she integrates real and filmic space while articulating a relationship between a self-observing subject and the immediate environment. Language—her voice often serving as the unseen narrator—and music are central to her work; they set a rhythm or reflect on what is shown. Sabine Marte also distorts and deconstructs her video images, or films from unusual angles. When edited together this footage results in a unique and sometimes trashy visual aesthetic, which is simultaneously confusing and compelling—ultimately to a freeing effect.

The screening has included the videos “Gras A/B” (2003-2004), “Helen A/B + das Meer” (2006), “Ich möchte gerne mal einen Horrorfilm machen” (1999), und “Stewardessen Clip” (2003), among others. Sabine Marte has subsequently talked with Holger Kube Ventura about her work and answer questions from the audience.

Sabine Marte (born 1967 in Feldkirch, AT) first studied Graphic Design at the Höhere Grafischen BLVA and then at the School of Applied Arts. Her videos and performances have been presented at numerous festivals and have been shown in many exhibitions, such as the Diagonale in Graz, im Brut/Künstlerhaus in Vienna, and The Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival. Sabine Marte is co-founder of the bands SV DAMENKRAFT and Pendler.
