The Changing Artistic Landscape of Frankfurt

18.01.2013

Until the founding of the Schirn Kunsthalle (1986), Portikus (1987), and the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst (1991), the Frankfurter Kunstverein was the only major exhibition venue for contemporary art in Frankfurt am Main. Since then, the artistic landscape of the city has changed dramatically and a number of institutions and organizations have the kind of exhibition and event programs that used to be the sole domain of the Kunstverein. This raises questions as to institutional profiles and competition.

A panel moderated by Peter Iden (former Editor of the “Feuilleton” of the Frankfurter Rundschau, Founding Director of the MMK) with:

Jean-Christophe Ammann (Director MMK, 1991-2001),
Martina Detterer (Gallerist since 1994),
Max Hollein (Director, Schirn Kunsthalle, Städel Museum, Liebighaus since 2001/2006),
Kasper König (Rector, Städelschule 1989-2000, Founding Director of Portikus),
Felix Ruhöfer (Artistic Director, basis),
Luminita Sabau (Head of the DZ Bank Art Collection 1994-2011, Member of the Board, Frankfurter Kunstverein).
