What is the secret of freedom? What we can learn from an artists’ residency program?

06.09.2011

How is exciting culture generated? What do artists need? What is a “dance scene”? “Fresh innovation comes from young people,” says Dieter Buroch, who turned an old soap factory into the internationally respected art and performance center Mousonturm. He made Frankfurt into the “dance city of Germany” and was then continuing his original success with the dance company Kidd Pivot Frankfurt RM. At the end of this year he has been leaving his institution, but he still had a few suggestions for Frankfurt. We wanted to get to the bottom of his secret.

Born in 1951 in Frankfurt, Dieter Buroch initially worked as an independent artist, and in 1977 he initiated the “Neun-Tage-Fest” (Nine Day Festival) im Mousonturm, before becoming its director in 1988. Mousonturm developed into one of the best networked artist residencies in Germany that has presented many internationally acclaimed highlights. As of 2012 Buroch will curate the Munich dance festival DANCE.
