Workshop for school classes: Contemplation
13.12.2024, 11:00
About the artist Lawrence Malstaf and his exploration of the body and breathing
For secondary school students (grades 6-10)
with Elif Öner und Lia Mootz
Duration: 1.5 hours
The artist Lawrence Malstaf is known for his interactive works that deal with the human body and its perceptual possibilities. Breath is at the centre of his work Shrink, which is always activated on Saturdays and Sundays in the exhibition. In a frame structure, a person is pressed between two large, transparent foils. A tube removes the air and creates a vacuum so that the body is compressed and appears to float. A second tube supplies air and allows the person to breathe. This state puts them in an altered, more focussed perception of their own body. Internal processes such as heartbeat and breathing become much more noticeable. This experience allows participants to experience the connection to their body in a deeper way. Controlled breathing leads to increased awareness of the here and now. It is known in various cultures as meditation, autogenic training or mindfulness.
The aim of the workshop is to teach young people in particular a valuable practice that they can use to influence their mind and body in everyday life. In a world that is spinning ever faster, we would like to pause together in this workshop. How can we create moments of stillness?
Through simple breathing exercises and mindful body awareness exercises, we will take time to calm down and consciously feel our bodies. We learn to understand the language of our body and to pay attention to the subtle signals it sends us.
Please note that the workshop will take place in German.

A reduced workshop fee of €65 applies for school classes (including admission to the exhibition and material costs).

About the workshop series for school classes in the exhibition The Presence of Absence in cooperation with the Institute for Art Education at Justus Liebig University Giessen
The workshops for children and young people are organised in cooperation with the Institute for Art Education at Justus Liebig University Giessen. Under the direction of Tobias Becker, the students of his project seminar offer a rich programme specially developed for the Frankfurter Kunstverein.
The starting point will be individual works of art or exhibition objects from the fields of art, natural history and archaeology. The workshop leaders will familiarise your class with various materials and techniques that illustrate the themes of the exhibition. Through the practical use of materials such as clay, plaster, soot, but also stargazing apps, children and young people are introduced to numerous topics through vivid sensory impressions, through feeling and touching.
The workshops are about learning to read traces and to perceive them as the starting point for imagination and stories, but also for logical reasoning. In the workshops, the students will also creatively design signs and traces themselves in order to experience and reflect on the world that surrounds us.
Our motto is to know the past in order to imagine the future and thus positively change the present.
