We are looking for participants for Lawrence Maltaf’s performance “Shrink”

For the upcoming exhibition The Presence of Absence (October 12, 2024 to February 16, 2025, opening on October 11, 2024, at 6:30 pm), the Frankfurter Kunstverein is looking for committed people who would like to participate in the installation Shrink (1995) by Lawrence Malstaf (*1972, Brussels) for a small compensation.

About the performance Shrink:

Each performance lasts 20 minutes. The person climbs between two hanging plastic sheets. The performer can regulate the air supply themselves through a transparent tube located between the two sheets. A negative pressure is created so that the person’s body floats. Breathing is guaranteed at all times through the air supply tube. The artist teaches the participants this technique and coordination. The pressure created between the plastic sheets forms an imprint of the body. The performance involves the people inside the foils moving slowly and changing their positions.

The exhibition runs from October 11, 2024 (opening) – February 16, 2025. The performances will be open to the public on Saturdays (2 – 7 pm) and Sundays (12 am – 5 pm).

On each day of the performance, two people are present and take turns performing. Before the exhibition begins, the performers receive an introduction in a workshop with the artist Lawrence Malstaf.

We offer a small fee of 80 euros per performance day as compensation.

  • Experience with dance or performance is an advantage, but not necessary.
However, an affinity for movement and no fear of a physical experience in front of an audience are required.
  • Ability to concentrate and reliability.
  • Due to the technical requirements, a maximum weight of 85 kg is necessary.
