On the graphic work of Josef Felix Müller — Catalogue raisonné of prints — Roland Wäspe: A reading. — Josef Felix Müller’s figures find themselves at the mercy of the powers of repressed instincts and fears. Sexuality is understood as the innermost life energy, which is the source of all human – especially creative – activity. Perverted by repression and denial, it becomes a deadly and destructive force in Müller’s work. The violation of the human being through the forced separation of spirit and body comes to the surface in motifs of mutilation and decapitation. Cruel rituals and sacrifices appear as an expression of illness and at the same time as a helpless search for original unity. Overlapping pictorial levels reflect the deeper layers of human consciousness, in which the alienation of the individual from his very own nature and naturalness and from society is manifested.
