Meret Kern works with both gouache and charcoal on paper. The annual editions of 2023 present a selection from her series, which she exhibited at And This is Us 2023 – Young Art from Frankfurt at the Frankfurt Kunstverein. She works without a template, and her central motifs are human heads and busts. The figures emerge through color spills on water-impregnated papers, which are then laid out to dry. In the charcoal drawings, the line is the essential element. Meret Kern selectively smudges it, thus creating plasticity and shadows on the bodies. She draws and paints in a continuous process. In an intense flow of creativity, she searches for forms, expressions, and feelings until a face appears familiar. These are feelings turned into shapes, emotional moods captured on paper in human faces.
Meret Kern (born in 1997 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany) grew up in Hamburg, Germany, and currently lives and works in Frankfurt am Main. Since 2019, she has been studying at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach under Prof. Heiner Blum, focusing on drawing, painting, and photography. Meret Kern has exhibited her work in various institutions, including noroomgalery in Hamburg, Zollamt Galerie in Offenbach am Main, Magma Maria in Offenbach am Main, Kunstverein Familie Montez in Frankfurt am Main, and most recently in the exhibition And This is Us 2023 at the Frankfurt Kunstverein.
