The Danish conceptual artist Simon Dybbroe Møller (born 1976) studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and had a major solo exhibition at the Frankfurter Kunstverein and the Kunstverein Hannover in 2009. Many of his works play with the viewer’s expectations: what one believes to see at first glance often turns out to be something completely different. At first glance, the untitled offset print presented here as an edition is simple and laconic. A short, four-line sentence set in capitals is printed on a white background: “Millions now living will die”. This is a true statement that refers to death as an existential basic constant of life. It is precisely this reference that creates unease, not only because one is reminded of one’s own mortality, but also because Møller expresses everyday dying in numbers that one is not aware of. Further irritation arises when you turn the print over or hold it against light. Then an additional word appears in the sentence that reverses the statement “Millions now living will never die”. The result is an answer that can be interpreted in very different ways and which shows Møller’s work as a game with the laws of language and the cultural imprints of the viewer.
