In his series Towards Universal Pattern Recognition, Shaw presents reframed archival photographs of subjects experiencing various states of spiritual, hedonistic or technological catharsis. Placed under custom-machined prismatic acrylic that has been designed to focus on a specific element of the picture, the photos distort and repeat. This psychedelic skewing of documentary imagery illustrates the altered state of consciousness of the varied subject(s) under the same parameters, thus considering a universal thread to all transcendental experience.
