Historical Paintings

Concerned with much more than the simple depiction of historical events, artist Dierk Schmidt is interested in the expanded definition of historical painting, that is, a constant assessment of contemporary references to the historical. The artist does not view his paintings as illustrating social constellations but as media through which debate is conducted and conflicting interests is revealed.

In a panel discussion within the context of his exhibition “IMAGE LEAKS — On the Image Politics of Resources” the artist talked with Holger Kube Ventura (Director Frankfurter Kunstverein) and Martin Engler (Director of the Collection of Post-1945 Art, Städel Museum) on the topic of historical painting and its significance for his work.
